Context for Loved by the Prickly Pear:

Remember the wasps who made a home in the bike rack in the parking lot outside the Red Butte Amphitheater? The wasps who made a home next to a viewing bench on the creek?
Now tell the story of the wasps who made a home in a prickly pear cactus in City Creek Canyon. And tell everyone about the aphid-looking-beetles who lived on the other side of the prickly pear. Tell them about the yellow flowers that fell and were replaced by prickly pear fruit. Remember when you ate the fruit straight from the cactus? You had needles all over your fingers, lips and legs. “Glochids” is what the dictionary called the tiny needles. As recommended, you rubbed the glochids off with pantyhose.

You added the snails to the painting of the prickly pear. They are important. Important in a way you can’t easily articulate right now. That’s okay. You used your “artistic license” and made one of the snails left-handed like you.
